This week Kindergarten students were very excited to conduct a fun experiment about gases. We have been learning that gases flup a whole space and to demonstrate this we inflated balloons using vinegar and bicarbonate soda.

Students worked with a partner to  tip their balloon full of bicarbonate soda into their bottles of vinegar and watched as the balloons inflated. One even exploded!

After we blew up the balloons students drew pictures of the activity and spent time on the mat explaining what they had drawn to a friend. Representing and then explaining your experiences is an important part of oral language development. These activities are short, targeted activities aimed to exposure children to a variety of learning styles and are a very engaging and thoroughly enjoyed part of our weekly program.

Floating and sinking

Last week Kindergarten learned about liquids as part of our water cycle study. Children learned that liquids can be poured, take the shape of the container they fill and stay in the bottom of the containers.  This lead to a discussion of things that float or sink in water.  To enable children to explore this idea we set up a water investigation tub in the classroom. Children poured water, investigated what floated and sank and took great delight in tipping water from a great height!

This week we will learn about the concept of gas and experiment blowing up balloons with bicarbonate soda and vinegar. Stay tuned!
