We have had a fabulous week so far engaging with our Antarctic Research Station. After Mrs Seamer demonstrated how researchers observe wildlife and record their observations the students got stuck in discovering the fun of Antarctica for themselves! The ice fishing has been a big hit with students reading the numbers on the fish and throwing them back.

Today we conducted an experiment to see if we could use wool to pick up ice cubes. Students were asked to try and pick up the ice cube on their own first.

Before being given some salt to complete the experiment.

We then discussed why the experiment worked (The salt briefly melted the ice and then the water refroze trapping the wool) and that sometimes when people live in places with lots of snow and ice on the road, salt can be used to melt the ice for cars to safely drive.

We are looking forward to learning all about penguins next week!

Take care,

St Joseph’s Kindergarten Class.
